Trayvon Martin supporters rally on downtown streets

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – People in KC joined hundreds of other cities across the country to rally in support of Trayvon Martin. The teenager was fatally shot in Sanford, Fla. by neighborhood watchmen George Zimmerman in February of 2012. Zimmerman was acquitted last week in a Florida courtroom of second-degree murder in Martin’s death.

With paper, pencil and cardboard signs, dozens met in downtown Kansas City on Saturday to raise their voices in hopes of having new charges brought against Zimmerman.

“It’s something positive to do, you know? Like there’s a lot of other way I’m sure a lot of us could be out expressing ourselves,” Sterling White, artist and Martin supporter, said.

Vigils were held with the intent to send a strong message to Washington D.C.: File a federal hate crime against Zimmerman.
