New Map Shows Twitter Hate Across the Country

According to a new map that pinpoints hate speech across Twitter, the western side of the United States is a lot nicer than the east. This map was created by geography students at Humboldt State University in California. It looked at over 150,000 geocoded tweets, meaning ones that share their location. They sorted out tweets containing racist, homophobic and anti-disability words between June 2012 and April 2013. The researches then analyzed the tweets to see if they were hateful or not.

According to their studies, most of the hateful tweets come from smaller towns and rural areas. Some of the biggest spots for homophobic tweets came from the border of Oklahoma and Texas, and the place with the most racist tweets came from western Indiana. Homophobic tweets were more widespread than racist ones, but the most came from the southeastern part of the country.
