CBS Connecticut

The Hartford Public Schools are getting nearly five million dollars from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation in what the foundation calls a “bold collaboration between public charter and traditional schools.

Of the seven cities announced as grant recipients today,  Hartford is receiving the largest single block of funds.  The other communities are New York,  Boston,  Philadelphia, Denver,  New Orleans and Spring Branch, Texas.  All are among 16 communities which  received initial grants of $100,000 in the program to encourage charter schools and traditional public schools to work together.

The foundation says the aim of the program is to ensure all students have a high-quality education and to boost college and career readiness for students. The president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, Nina Rees, says school and communtiy leaders working together can learn from one another and share resources.
